BOATS WITH NO SEA

Boats can remain in the harbor without sailors. Boats can be abandoned at the mercy of marine currents. But a sea-less boat must make people think. A ship with no sea attracts attention and suggests questions about its dry fate. Why does it lie there on dry land after a lifetime in the water? Who was its captain? Who were its sailors? And its passengers? The camera lens records the fate of these boats with no sea and tries to give them back a poetic fate. The camera lens imagines new ports and new sea routes for them. How many lives could these ships with no sea save?

Around Naxos island, Greece, with my little black Rollei 35 LED and IlFord HP5 Plus films. Greek beers and Aegean sun did the rest. “YAMAS!”

NAXOS AS CALIFORNIA IN THE SEVENTIES

A series of b&w shots taken in Naxos, Cyclades, Greece, during the summers of 2015 and 2016 that remind me of California in the Seventies . No details reveal the real location of the set; just lines, contrast and shadows from a possible past. [Shots taken with Canon EOS 1100D, Ricoh GX100 and Olympus E-P2]

A NEW F/50 PROJECT

This short “summer series” – seven shots taken in Agios Prokopios, Naxos Island, Cyclades, during a period of 1 hour with a 50 mm lens – helped me explore the lines/feel of continuity between land and sea. I was probably looking for a personal sense of space where the horizon shapes a continuity across the shots. I was looking for a sense of surprise too – catching the amazing moment when the eyes alight on the water over the dunes. There definitely is a feeling of relief and amusement in each image to the extent that the horizon is “broken” or “interrupted” by humans: their familiar presence dares to leave the beach and embrace the water unconditionally.
